Steps to Take if You Have a Loose Tooth

When a child loses a tooth, there is reason to celebrate, especially since they know the Tooth Fairy will be leaving them a special gift under their pillow. However, when adults have a loose tooth or one falls out unexpectedly, this often results in feelings of panic and uncertainty. If you begin to notice one or more of your teeth feel loose, it’s time to get in to see your dentist for treatment. But what should you do in the meantime? Read on to learn what steps you need to take to avoid more serious harm to your oral health.

1.      Schedule an Appointment with Your Dentist

Instead of rushing to a nearby emergency room, it is best if you contact your dental team and alert them to the situation. Because they are better equipped to handle these types of situations, they can deliver immediate care when necessary and help you avoid a long wait. Not to mention, they can treat more than just your symptoms (i.e., pain). They can also discuss treatment options to help repair and restore your smile.

2.      Avoid Touching It

If you have a loose tooth, you may be tempted to touch or play with it. Avoid doing this. Why? Because your hands contain bacteria that can enter your mouth and spread throughout the soft tissue. Not to mention, you could accidentally cause more damage to your gums and teeth.

3.      Don’t Eat Sticky or Hard Foods

If you become hungry while waiting to see your dentist, do not turn to chewy or hard foods. Biting down on these objects with a loose tooth can apply unnecessary pressure to the area, resulting in further harm. Try to avoid chewing or eating on that side of your mouth until you are able to get in to see your dentist for necessary treatment.

4.      Maintain a Clean Mouth

You might assume you should brush and floss your teeth like normal, even with a loose tooth; however, this can cause it to become looser. Instead, use warm water to swish around in your mouth before spitting it out. Not only will this help to keep your mouth clean, but it will work to remove harmful bacteria and food particles that attempt to stick to your teeth and gums.

5.      Listen to Your Dentist

When arriving at your dentist’s office, your dental team will begin by treating your immediate symptoms. Once any pain or swelling is under control, your dentist will likely discuss available treatment options to care for your particular problem. If the tooth is loose and has not fallen out, it may be possible to apply a splint to help hold it in place until the root fully heals. But if the tooth is severely damaged, the only viable option may be to remove it and replace it using a customized restoration.

No matter the recommendation offered by your dentist, you should know they will never suggest a treatment that isn’t completely necessary. Ensuring the health and longevity of your smile is crucial, so be sure to take the appropriate steps while at home before allowing the professionals to take better care of your smile.
